Dùn Caan

The distinctive flat-topped summit of Dùn Caan (Dùn Cana in Gaelic) is the highest hill on the Isle of Raasay and a sensational viewpoint. Standing at the top, surrounded by endless views of mountain and sea, one can sympathise with James Boswell who is said to have danced a jig when he visited the summit during his famous tour of the Highlands and Islands with Samuel Boswell in 1773.

Dun Caan is surrounded by steep cliffs and the scenery to the east drops dramatically 400m to the sea in a series of steep bluffs, hiding the deserted old crofting settlement of Hallaig.

It was very misty when we parked the car, but we saw a few families go up and decided to join them. After a short time we were through the mist and above the clouds - the views were amazing. A friendly walker took some photographs of us at the top! The detour off to the right was due to John's poor navigation!

Even Liz is in short sleeves!   The path was clearly marked (but John Still missed it!)

Above the mist, we are level with the cloud!
