Wednesday 5 July 2017Midhurst to Petersfield: 12.9 miles - 28,149 stepsThis was a new route - I caught the 92 bus at 8:36 from The Half Moon pub in Sheet to Midhurst bus station - this took 20 minutes - then more than four hours to walk back! I almost didn't get the bus: I didn't realise that the stop was a request stop and only put my hand up when I thought that the bus was going straight past! To add insult to injury I discovered that I couldn't use my bus pass before 9:30 am and so had to PAY! The walk was initially quite different from my normal walks - along the River Rother and through parkland rather than fields. Further on I went through woods, then Stedham Common. Much of the way followed the Serpent Trail which goes from Haslemere to Petersfield. It's given the name not because there are snakes on the path but because the route is a very bendy one - like a snake. I had breakfast sitting on a log and carefully washed out my one pint milk carton so that later, passing through Nyewood I popped into Ballards brewery and got Fran, the man in the shop, to fill it with Ballards best biter - at £1.70 a pint, half what you'd pay in a pub! It was getting quite warm, up to 26C, so I was glad to get back home for a cool shower. OS maps are wonderful - according to the map the footpath is immediately to the right of the pylon - and it is! |
